Who are Karingal Volunteers?

Volunteers can be students, retired people, someone seeking experience in the disability industry, anyone with an interest in people. Karingal volunteers build relationships with people with a disability and participate in a diverse range of diverse community activities.

  • Enhance participants’ quality of life by increased community participation, choice and control.
  • Increase participants self esteem and raise competencies through developing empowering relationships and participation in a wide range of positive experiences.

How do I become a Volunteer?

There is a selection process. This will include an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, the successful completion of police, referee checks and participation in the orientation program.

Orientation

Initial orientation provides prospective volunteers with an overview of Karingal services, what can be expected in volunteering with Karingal and an introduction to disability awareness. It is a time to ask questions, explore and learn whether volunteering at Karingal is right for you.

Hours

 
Volunteers receive ongoing training and support 

Volunteers are matched with activities based on their skills, interests, experience and availability. Many activities take place between 9.30am and finish at 3pm. Volunteers also support participants in social activities during the weekends and evenings.

Ongoing training and support
 

 

As part of Karingal’s commitment to volunteers, ongoing training is provided on topics of relevance and regular interviews are held with volunteers to provide support. A presentation is held each year where volunteers receive formal recognition of service.
