Victoria’s Young Australian of the Year will be a guest speaker at this year’s Brain Injury Awareness Week Community Forum on August 16.
Presented by Karingal branch ARCsupport, in conjunction with Bellarine Community Health, Anj Barker will talk about her journey with acquired brain injury.
At 16, Anj’s her life changed forever when she was brutally bashed to near death by her ex-boyfriend.

Project gives a voice for young people

The Building Better Lives workshop was held in June in a bid to give a voice to young people who may be faced with the proposition of moving into a nursing home.
The workshop, run in conjunction with ARCsupport and the Summer Foundation, saw five stories developed and recorded about each individual and the issues surrounding age-appropriate accommodation.

Generous donation changes young people’s lives

The lives of five Karingal residents with disabilities has been made more comfortable after the people from Mercy Place Rice Village in Marshalltown donated more than $7000 for a versatile shower chair.
The $11,000 specialised chair has unique functions allowing battery operated height and reclining adjustment as well as making assisted showering and other hygiene routines not only safer but more comfortable. It also raises efficiency of care and reduces the risk of back injuries to carers.

Karingal destined for new head office

Karingal is an organisation that has grown a great deal, particularly over the past 10 years and this has led to the need for a new head office.
I am pleased to announce that after a reasonably long search, Karingal will soon purchase the former LeisureLinks Centre site in Reynolds Road, Belmont from the City of Greater Geelong.
This large site will be redeveloped into a new Karingal headquarters and will allow staff more space, and room for the organisation to grow into the future.

Hastings House residents move in
17 August 2011
A residence for six people with disabilities has been completed in Hastings, on the Mornington Peninsula with Konnections clients moving in during July.
A house warming was held for the new residents and their families, with more than 40 people attending the special evening. The evening was a great way for residents and families to get to know each other.

Kommercial employees take on new leadership roles

Three Kommercial employees who have excelled themselves in their roles have been promoted to take on Team Leader positions.
Kommercial provides employment for people with disabilities in a supported working environment with roles specialising in hospitality, land care and packaging.
Kommercial Service Co-ordinator Ryan Gibbons said 10 supported employees applied for the team leader roles, with each going through an interview process.

Frankston NDIS forum a great success

More than 120 people showed their support for a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) when they attended a forum to discuss the scheme in April.
Deputy National NDIS Campaign Director Kirsten Dean explained to the audience that an NDIS would provide people with disabilities, their families and carers with the care, support therapy and equipment they need, when they need it.

NDIS campaign continues to gain great support

Karingal continues to promote the Every Australian Counts (EAC) Campaign in support of a National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The campaign is building momentum and supporter numbers continue to grow. Over 22,000 people and organisations have now registered their support for the national campaign.
On May 11 more than 50 people who attended the Karingal Volunteers Presentation evening signed up as supporters of the campaign.
