KABLE footy team kicks great goals

Karingal Adventure Based Learning Experience (KABLE) participants were filled with nerves and excited when they joined up with Rec LINK, Barwon Health and the Geelong Salvation Army to start a football team. Many of the guys hadn’t played footy for years, so they trained hard to get fit. The games were played on alternate weeks at venues as far away as Sorrento, Old Collingwood and Carlton.

Karingal and Alcoa partnership wins award

The Alcoa Aluminium Smelter in Point Henry has won the 2011 National Disability Awards - Business Award, recognising the organisation’s long term partnership with Karingal. The award winners were announced at a ceremony in Canberra in November. The nomination was put forward by Karingal. “The Alcoa- Karingal partnership represents an evolution in the process to create employment opportunities in an industrial manufacturing setting,” Karingal CEO Daryl Starkey said.

Kommercial packing for Christmas

The crew at Kommercial have had one of their busiest years ever packaging Christmas hampers. They started at the beginning of September to ensure products would hit supermarket shelves in time for Christmas shoppers.

New business arises from determination

Starting a successful catering company and ending ties with Centrelink was Gavin Draper’s key motivations when he registered with MatchWorks in Footscray. With 20-years’ experience working around the world, Gavin has served food at restaurants in England, France, Spain and also on the cruise liner the Queen Elizabeth 2 for 12 months. Gavin came to Australia 10 years ago for a lifestyle change and while he worked from Perth to Sydney, and Cairns to Melbourne, nothing became permanent.

Snow camp a great KABLE adventure

A group of Karingal Adventure Based Learning Experience (KABLE) participants hopped in a bus and headed for the snow in August for another great trip. Luck was on their side as snowflakes fell the night of their arrival covering the trees and leaving a soft blanket of snow ahead of a big day of tobogganing and snowman building.

Colac farmhouse improvement takes shape

MatchWorks’ Colac has recently completed a Work for the Dole Activity in conjunction with Karingal’s Colac Farm House. The MatchWorks participants were involved in enhancing and maintaining the outdoor areas and facilities at the farm house to create a pleasant and interactive environment for Karingal participants to use.

The Rotary Club of Mornington Night at the Opera fundraising event for Karingal Konnections was a great success. Held at the Tanglewood Downs Estate Winery, the evening was attended by 90 local residents, business representatives, Geoff Shaw Member for Frankston and Karingal Konnections clients and staff.
