Top award presented for commitment and achievement

15 December 2010

The Karingal Employee and Achiever of the Year awards were presented at the organisation’s AGM recently to give recognition for effort, commitment and success.

Both awards aspire to recognise the efforts of a staff member and also acknowledge the efforts and achievements of a Karingal participant.

The Achiever of the Year award was presented to Michael Ashman.

Michael became a MatchWorks client in 2007 and has worked very hard since to overcome significant personal hurdles to gain employment.

He completed Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs and a Certificate IV in Mental Health, during which time he earned the “Student of Merit” award. This recognition is given to a person who embodies the essence of community work.

As part of his studies, Michael undertook work placement at the Geelong Withdrawal Unit, which resulted in voluntary work, before he was offered paid casual employment.

He also went on to do further casual and part-time work in the field, helping disadvantaged young people.

In May this year Michael applied for a full-time position with Barwon Youth as a Youth Outreach Worker. He got the job and started in May 2010.

Michael is now a healthy, inspired and dedicated Youth Worker.

The Employee of the Year award was presented to Julie Mippy, who has been employed with Karingal’s Accommodation Support branch for more than 25 years and is currently Team Leader at Karingal House.
