Pubic transport access made easy

13 October 2009

People who have a severe and permanent disability and can travel independently on public transport will have access to a new, free travel pass.

Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said there were a small number of public transport users unable to use ticketing machines and the new pass aimed to give them peace of mind.

The Access Travel Pass will be introduced when the new myki ticketing system is rolled out throughout the State later this year.

It will be made available to people who use a wheelchair and have limited fine hand movement making it difficult to reach and use ticketing machines. Some people with intellectual disabilities may also be eligible for the new pass, Ms Kosky said.

“Following consultation with a number of special interest groups we have decided to close the gap by introducing the new Access Travel Pass.

“This pass will be used in the same way that people currently use the Vision Impaired Travel Pass.

“Pass holders will need to carry it whenever they use public transport and it will entitle them to free travel.

The application process for the pass will include several steps:

- A registered health professional would need to certify that the applicant can travel independently but cannot use the tickets.

- All applicants will be reviewed by an independent panel.

Application forms for the Access Travel Pass are now available though the Metlink Central Pass Office or by visiting www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au .
