March brings Karnivale and ART to life
19 April 2010
Kardinia House came alive with the fun and excitement of a family fair on Sunday, March 28 for Karnivale.
Now in its second year the event proved yet again to be a great success, despite the threat of rain.
But the warm day ensured families came in their droves to enjoy everything from live entertainment, the circus school and farm animals to stalls and fabulous food.
Event Co-ordinator Justine Bily said the day went well and thanked all the sponsors, including Westpac and Loddon Mallee Housing Services, for their support.
But she said the day could not have gone ahead without the help of volunteers.
“Karnivale wouldn’t have been the success it was without volunteers. Thanks to everyone from within Karingal, but also the many people from other organisations who offered their time– it’s much appreciated.”
KarnivART, an exhibition of works by artists with disabilities, was also highly successful with more than 50 entrants this year.
The winner was Sian Morgan from Aireys Inlet for her piece called Masquerade.
KarnivART judge, artist Jamie Daddo, said he was impressed by all the works.
“Art is all around us as it takes so many different forms,” he said at the opening of the exhibition.
“The fact that these pieces come from somewhere inside the hearts and consciousnesses are statements worthy of our consideration.
“The mere act of creating something then labelling it as ‘art’ takes such strength by people. There are boundless obstacles in the path of every ‘artist’.
“By virtue of putting these pieces before us means that there is relevance here.
“By giving part of yourself, to take part in the process of creation, makes for a deeper understanding of the toils and troubles travelled through by each of the artists here.
“There’s a distant hope that we’ll all come to a similar understanding from these works.”
