Leadership is rewarded

Standing up in front of a crowd, especially family and friends, had Jacqueline Hawthorn bursting with pride as she received her Impetus Youth Award for Leadership recently.
The award recognises an individual who has demonstrated leadership and made significant achievements in their field of education, business, or government, and thereby made a noteworthy contribution to their community.
The City of Greater Geelong Council award was presented at a gala ceremony to Jacqueline by Mayor Cr John Mitchell recently with each of the 13 winners receiving a certificate as well as $500.
It was Jacqueline’s participation in various Karingal programs including community skills, WorkLinks, the women’s group, EdLinks, photography and swimming which inspired Karingal staff to nominate her.
But Jacqueline first learnt the value of leadership after becoming an Air Force Cadet five years ago.
Jacqueline admits she is very busy, but being outdoors is what she enjoys the most.
“I like to help people – it’s a good feeling,” she said.
She has also dedicated some of her time to volunteering with St Laurence, which Jacqueline said helped her to get her new job at Mitre 10, which she started recently.
“They helped teach me the cash register, which is good – and serving customers too,” she said.
“My favourite thing is maths. I was an A grade student at maths in high school.“
