Every Australian Counts rally draws a crowd
14 April 2011
The Geelong Waterfront turned red on February 10 when more than 1000 people wearing red t-shirts attended a rally to campaign for a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for all Australians.
The rally was designed to kick off the 2011 campaign for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, of which Karingal is a proud and active supporter. The rally was attended by people with disabilities, their families, Karingal staff and the general public, all determined to highlight the growing need for an NDIS.
“Karingal is a proud supporter of the ‘Every Australian Counts’ campaign for the National Disability Insurance Scheme,” Karingal Chief Executive Officer Daryl Starkey said.
“With a growing number of Australians living with disabilities, the scheme aims to provide a better quality of service to people with disabilities and reduce the financial burdens that people living with a disability face.
“Everyone who attended the rally knows what it’s like to fight for funding and how disempowering it can be. It is clear that a national disability insurance scheme will be a major step forward in empowering all people with disabilities,” said Daryl.
The whole crowd cheered in agreement when campaign director, John Della Bosca, said; “the time has come for a new approach to how disability services are structured and funded in Australia.
“With more than two million Australians affected by significant disability: doesn’t that give us two million reasons to do something about it?” said John.
