Cassy splits to world games

15 December 2010

Cassy Geffke could not be prouder to say she is representing Australia at the upcoming Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens next year – but it’s not the first time.

Cassy is an accomplished gymnast and after 21 years in the sport has represented not only her region and state, but her country several times overseas, including in the United States in 1999 where she brought home five gold medals – one for each apparatus and one for her performance overall.

In 2007 Cassie travelled to Shanghai and again performed very well.

Cassy, who is also a MatchWorks client, said the sport was more difficult as the years progressed, but she remains as flexible as ever.

“I really love gymnastics – the floor especially because I like to dance,” she said.

“I am very grateful for everything my parents have done to help me – and everyone has helped – we really pull together.”

However, the big challenge for all athletes is raising the funds to go to the Games – with Cassy one of three athletes from the Region trying to raise the funds needed to attend in June.

“It is difficult because we don’t really get any sort of assistance at all – we have to do it all ourselves – the parents really get in and do what they can do, but there’s only so much we can do,” Cassy’s mum Diane said.

The Australian team will compete alongside 7500 athletes from 185 countries across 11 sports.

The Australian team is backed by Special Olympics Australia, however, as a not-for-profit organisation, they rely on public donations to take the financial pressure of athletes and families.

Cassy’s family have already held events to help cover the costs, including a sausage sizzle and trivia night – but more is needed.
