Broadmeadows youths find jobs in their droves

15 February 2011

MatchWorks has been involved in a ground-breaking project which saw 36 young people placed into employment during a 47-day period, in the Broadmeadows region.

High unemployment rates in the area inspired the program, with some reports indicating more than half of young people in Broadmeadows are unemployed.

Beginning on October 25, the campaign’s original aim was to place 30 people aged 16 – 24 into employment within 47 days: reflecting the area’s 3047 postcode.

However the program was so successful, it exceeded its targets.

The 3047 project was unique in that several local employment, training and community services agencies, including MatchWorks, banded together to form the Employment and Learning Committee 3047.

A local business donated a shopfront , allowing the centre to be established.

Computers were donated by a local training provider, and local employment agencies took turns in staffing the office.

The shopfront formed somewhat of a drop-in-centre for young people, and featured a ‘Jobs Board’ filled with employment vacancies, and a range of free workshops provided advice and support. MatchWorks also ran regular training sessions for small groups, on topics such as resume writing and interview techniques.

MatchWorks General Manager Michael Wasley said almost every person who visited the centre was referred to a job.

“This project has done a fantastic job in breaking the cycle of youth unemployment from a real community, grass roots level,” Mr Wasley said.

“It’s really great to see some positive press about young people and the northern suburbs”.

Mr Wasley said the project also brought the community- together, and built a real sense of pride.

Coolaroo twins Nigel and Neil Matti are two of the 36 young people who found employment, gaining painting and decorating apprenticeships with Greenvale painting company DNG Painting Services Victoria.

Nigel and Neil were referred to MatchWorks by Centrelink after being unemployed for two and six months respectively.

Grant Harbord from DNG Painting Services Victoria contacted MatchWorks to help him find young and keen staff, and Nigel and Neil were a perfect fit.

The initiative was such a success, that other areas and similar projects are being considered for the future
