Kommercial expands off site to form new Caron enclave

Kommercial launched a new enclave on site at Caron Laboratories in January. Karingal’s supported employment division has a strong partnership with Caron, which specialises in waxing and beauty products.

Karingal celebrates International Day of People with Disability

To celebrate the United Nation’s International Day of People with Disability (IDoPwD) on December 3, Kommercial held an open day at its Baxter Road site in North Geelong, where it provides supported employment. The event was launched by International Comedian Dave Thornton, whose brother Andrew is a supported employee at Kommercial. The All Abilities Day Dinner Dance was one of three events Konnections took part in to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability. Karingal’s Mornington Peninsula branch put a lot of work into organising the event, which was attended by more than 150 people on November 5 at the Rosebud Italian Social Club.

Looking ahead to another great year

As another year draws to a close, I am very pleased to be able to reflect back on the year and see that we have worked hard to achieve our overarching goal for the year, which is to grow our services and reach new people across the community. The Karingal Big Night Out has, for many years, been Karingal’s night of nights – and the record attendance of more than 650 people this year, I think, is symbolic. Riverview bears for Christmas charities

The Riverview Respite program is hoping that it will be a “Bear-ry Christmas” for those who will receive a hand-knitted bear amongst their Christmas gifts this year. Program participants have been busy knitting colourful squares and with the assistance of program staff they were hand-stitched together to make a bear.

Top award presented for commitment and achievement

The Karingal Employee and Achiever of the Year awards were presented at the organisation’s AGM recently to give recognition for effort, commitment and success. Both awards aspire to recognise the efforts of a staff member and also acknowledge the efforts and achievements of a Karingal participant. The Achiever of the Year award was presented to Michael Ashman. Michael became a MatchWorks client in 2007 and has worked very hard since to overcome significant personal hurdles to gain employment.

New Karingal Chair elected at 2010 AGM

Cheryl Graham was elected as the new Chair of Karingal at its Annual General meeting on November 11. She was preceded by David McArthur, who has served four terms as chair throughout his 30 years on the Board of Directors.

Environment is front of mind at Karingal

Karingal have developed a list of eight environmental objectives in a bid to increase the sustainability of the organisation. The objectives have been formed keeping in mind that preserving the environment is the responsibility of individuals as well as businesses. Being mindful of day-to day activities can reduce environmental impact and it is hoped the strategies will help support this.
