KarnivART prize announced

KarnivART 2011 was another great success this year with artist Lola Camm taking out the top prize for her piece Lola and her Dog. The winner was not able to be there on the night, but pictured is KarnivART judge Jamie Daddo and Niall Hensey, Haven Chief Operations Officer and the major sponsor for the event, with the winning work.

New General Manager for Karingal

Karingal welcomed Christine Harding to the organisation in February as its newest member of the Senior Management Team. Alcoa helps out Marshall

Alcoa employees have teamed up with Karingal Transcend, formally Mental Health Support, as part of their ongoing employee community volunteering program. Alcoa Point Henry, with the assistance of BacLinks, has an established calendar of community involvement for 2011, giving employees the opportunity to volunteer during work hours for a range of interesting projects during the year. The first for the year took place at Karingal Transcend’s property in Marshall on March 31.

Volunteers recognised for service

Karingal will recognise the unique contribution volunteers make to the life of the organisation during the annual Volunteer Presentation evening on May 11. This year the event will be held at the National Wool Museum and volunteers are invited to bring their friends and family on the evening. The night will also see three volunteers recognised for 20 years of service to Karingal, as well as one for an impressive 25 years.

New housing opens doors for young people with disabilities

Young adults with disabilities have moved into a new, purpose-built home named ‘Karroong’ in Belmont which was officially opened by Karingal in December. The new house in Amundsen Street provides accommodation for five people, who have either been living in, or were at risk of entering, residential aged care. Twilight Karnivale a highlight in March

Why not get the family together after work on Friday, March 18 and enjoy the fun atmosphere of Karingal’s Twilight Karnivale. There promises to be entertainment for the whole family including the Code1 Police Band, rides and a circus school as well as terrific food, wine, market stalls and arts and crafts.

KarnivART entries now open

Entries for KarnivART ‘11, an exhibition and art show of works by artists with disabilities, are now open. Entrants must be over the age of 18 and living in the Geelong, Barwon South West, and Southern Metropolitan Regions of Victoria.

Students celebrate terrific milestone

The EdLinks graduation ceremony was another great success this year with more than 230 people attending the November 26 event. The Karingal EdLinks program focuses on the development and maintenance of initial and basic literacy and numeracy skills for people with disabilities. Program Co-ordinator Ron McGlynn said there were 92 students enrolled in the program last year and more than 100 ready to commence this year, making it the largest program of its type in Australia.

Garden brings Warrnambool community together

After many years of planning, the Warrnambool Shared Garden Project has finally come to fruition, and Karingal has secured its very own spot. The project started as an idea in late 2005 with the purpose of creating a gathering place where members of the whole community could meet, grow food, share knowledge and learn and practice sustainable living.

Broadmeadows youths find jobs in their droves

MatchWorks has been involved in a ground-breaking project which saw 36 young people placed into employment during a 47-day period, in the Broadmeadows region. High unemployment rates in the area inspired the program, with some reports indicating more than half of young people in Broadmeadows are unemployed.
