Karingal night of nights a glittering success

The 2010 Karingal Big Night Out attracted more than 650 people, an all-time record number.
The theme of the night was “Hollywood”, with everyone dressed as their favourite film stars.
Everyone looked spectacular, with special mentions going to Karingal Chief Executive Daryl Starkey as “The Joker”, and an entire table of Marilyn Monroes.

Life membership awarded to volunteer

Robyn Flewell-Smith was presented with a Karingal Life Membership award at Karingal’s Big Night Out recently.
She received this in recognition of her outstanding service as a volunteer for the organisation for over 20 years.
Robyn has been involved not only with Karingal, but the disability sector for many years, including assisting with the original Karingal Fete.

Cassy splits to world games

Cassy Geffke could not be prouder to say she is representing Australia at the upcoming Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens next year – but it’s not the first time.
Cassy is an accomplished gymnast and after 21 years in the sport has represented not only her region and state, but her country several times overseas, including in the United States in 1999 where she brought home five gold medals – one for each apparatus and one for her performance overall.

Great job and top award for Joanna

MatchWorks job seeker Joanna Weeku is not only working and helping her community, she has also been recognised at the highest level for her success in learning.
Joanna has managed to overcome many obstacles to get to where she is today – the winner of the Victorian Adult Community Education Outstanding Learner Award 2010.

The 58th Annual General Meeting saw the Karingal Employee and Achiever of the Year recognised for the first time.
This recognition fits well with this year’s annual report, which has been themed, the Faces of Karingal’.

Karingal get in the spirit of cycle event

Karingal got into the swing of the UCI Road World Championships recently by taking part in bike decorating competitions and even volunteering with the official Fleet Management team.
The October event was the largest cycling race ever hosted in Australia, and provided in opportunity for members of the Karingal community to become involved in some extraordinary tasks.

Day aims to break down the barriers

To recognise the International Day of People with Disability, Karingal will be holding an open day at Kommercial on December 3.
The day will include demonstrations of the work supported employees do across its packaging, industrial, hospitality and landcare areas.

Students cook up a storm for Y Chef

The ‘Y’ Chef Cooking Challenge came to an exciting conclusion in September at the event’s final cook-off between the best VET in hospitality students.
The aim of the competition, sponsored by G-Force Apprentice Centre and The Gordon TAFE, is to train and inspire students for a career in hospitality through the guidance of a local chef.
