Spring 2006

Greetings Clair,

This has been a year of ongoing success and further growth for MatchWorks. Our Job Network and Personal Support Programme have continued to provide assistance to over 12,000 people throughout Geelong and the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Our new contracts for Work for the Dole involve assisting community organisations to set up and deliver projects which provide valuable work experience and skills to job seekers and benefits to local communities.

Congratulations also to Kristie Yarwood, specialist disability employment consultant from MatchWorks Sunshine, for being selected as a finalist in the National Employment Consultant of the Year awards.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you Seasons Greetings from all the staff at MatchWorks. Without your valuable support, MatchWorks would not be the success it is today.

Kind Regards,
Julie Graham, General Manager

  • Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to be an effective communicator
Cartoon of a boss yelling at an employee

Research shows that morale among new hires in an organisation is almost always high and then, by about the six-month point, it has dropped sharply. Empirical evidence suggests a correlation between employee morale and a bosses management capabilities.

One of the key attributes identified in a successful manager is the ability to communicate effectively.

In 2002 Geelong’s first juice bar was opened. Four years on, family owned and operated business Juicy Stuff, has gone from strength to strength.

When Leigh Van Ingen opened his first shop in Moorabool Street, Geelong, he had no idea the business would be such a success. With additional shops now in Pakington Street and Corio, the business’s success speaks for itself.

The Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP, launched a series of national industry and employer breakfasts on Monday 20th February in Sydney. The event was attended by over 500 of Australia’s leading business owners, CEOs, HR managers and industry representatives.

Mr Howard said employers must address the challenges of Australia’s ageing population and our declining birth rate now in order to stay competitive and economically viable in the future.

Corio Business Development Officer Elvio Surdich

    Elvio Surdich
    Business Development Officer
    Corio

How long have you been with MatchWorks? Five years. I started at St Albans as a BDO and worked there for 2 years and then moved to Corio. I am now based at the Geelong office.

How and why did you become a BDO? I have been involved in management and sales for most of my working life and I like networking and working with employers.

What attributes do you have that make you successful at your job? Empathy and understanding, but the most important factor of all is my maturity.

What do you like most about your job? The most rewarding part about my work is placing a willing client into work and helping them to get back to normality and increase their self esteem. I also enjoy interviewing and meeting young job seekers and helping them understand the importance of interviews and how they should present themselves.

What tips do you have for employers? One should never judge a book by its cover, or by a resume alone, treat others as you would like to be treated.
