2010 Girls’ Big Day Out
BacLinks in collaboration with GRVEC, The Gordon and the LLEN held the fourth Girls’ Big Day Out at The Gordon East Geelong Campus.

This year 103 Year-9 girls representing 13 schools participated in a range of trade and manufacturing based activities alongside women who currently work in non-traditional roles.

Major event sponsors were the Alcoa Foundation, Geelong Manufacturing Council, G-Force Apprentice Centre and GTEC and in-kind support was provided by Austeng, Barefoot Media, Maybelline and Village Cinemas.

Mentors were drawn from Alcoa, G-Force and GTEC.

Grovedale Community Centre Boardroom Chair Donation
The Grovedale Community Centre offered a set of 12 Boardroom Chairs to any interested party. These were taken up for use by Courthouse Youth Arts.

Alcoa-Leopold Wildlife Shelter

Ten Alcoa employee volunteers came to the rescue of the Leopold Wildlife Shelter by utilising their extensive range of skills to build a new bird aviary, paint the Animal Hospital and tile the washing area.

The Leopold Wildlife Shelter is run entirely by trained volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The shelter rescues around 1500 orphaned or injured animals annually and rehabilitates them before releasing them back into the wild. This leaves them little time and limited resources to improve or update the shelter’s facilities.

Powercor Office Items Donation

Powercor offered up two no-longer-needed 4-drawer filing cabinets for community use. Rainbow Riders was the beneficiary of their generous contribution.

2010 Winter Workplace Big Day Out
Over 130 program members from Karingal, St Laurence Community Services and Encompass Community Services Inc attended the event to enjoy for some fun, laughter and physical activity along with employee volunteers from 11 local businesses.

Powercor generously presented the event and local agency MatchWorks also offered support by providing additional sponsorship.

This unique event, which is supported by various businesses, sporting associations and community agencies, provides an opportunity for people who would otherwise not cross paths to have a great time together in a safe supported environment.

Sports and Recreation students from The Gordon enthusiastically provided a range of activities along with representatives of various sporting associations. Students from Oberon High School provided the Getting-to-know-you activity under the auspice of KABLE, Karingal’s Adventure Based Program.

BacLinks appreciated the support of a number of businesses including The Rotary Club of Highton, Tasman Meats, Costa Produce, Black Dog Promotions, Village Cinemas Geelong and the City of Greater Geelong for providing the venue. Their contributions helped ensure the day went successfully.
